Window treatments afford the luxury of completely transforming a room. They can soften a space or add needed harmony to an otherwise inconsistent room.
Thermal Pleated drapes afford insulating properties second to none. Mini-Blinds add a clean look with plenty of functionality at a relatively inexpensive cost. Top treatments are perfect when you want some color but don't want to obstruct the view and can certainly be used with functional mini blinds. Kitchen curtains afford a comfortable feel and are effortless to install using spring tension rods.
One of the most important aspects of treating windows is getting the right fit. When ordering curtains, if you plan on full coverage of the window, pretty much double the area you want to cover with fabric. So if your window is 60" wide, use no less than 120" of panel width.
Skimpy is not good at the window.
When measuring for pleated draperies, measure the face of the rod and add the returns to the wall.
(4" is standard, so add 8" for both returns.) Finally, add 6 to 8 inches for overlap of the panels and you are set. Keep in mind that
if you find your draperies are too full you can always create an additional pleat by creasing the header between the existing pleats.
When measuring for blinds, always use a stiff rule and decide if you would like an inside or outside mount. When considering inside mounts, be sure the depth of your window can accommodate the treatment. Also measure your window width at the top, middle and bottom, and choose the smallest measurement. Oftentimes windows are not truly square and you can run into problems if blinds are wider than the narrowest part.
For outside mount blinds, be sure the treatment extends at least 2 1/2" beyond the window frame on each side so light does not peak through. If you have moldings, decide first if you want to drill them or go beyond them, and then
order your blinds from there.
